I've been using this the most so I am also the most familiar with it. I'm constatly hopping between these three:īecause it is easy to set up, maintain and use. So now I just use Live-CDs on my desktop computer since it doesn't leave a trace on the machine, and I can easily try other distros. So my only option was putting UNR back on the netbook, and I already knew that it was not going to work out (hence why deal with GRUB if you know your never going to boot to the Linux partition anyways). After trying a lot of distros I found out that A LOT of them didn't want to boot up without a DVD drive. So to try out new distros on my netbook I hade to spend countless hours wiping a single usb stick and putting the new distro that I wanted to try on it. If you don't know, a netbook does not come with a DVD drive built in, and they cost a pretty penny at my local computer store. So when Win 7 came out I spent some $$$ and called it a college investment. It was ok, but I use it mainly for college so OO.o and the wifi not connecting to the school was starting to bother me a lot. I used UNR on my netbook for about 4 months. Which leaves me with my netbook if I want to install Linux. I do not own the desktop, it was built by my dad, and he said no more Linux on it. One is a new AAO netbook, and the other is a home built gaming inspired desktop. Let me explain my problems in detail so you can understand. Oh and one more, install on a flash drive (I've done it on a 4GB one but 8 would give you more room to play). And last but not least, if that's still no good to you, virtualbox. It runs ubuntu from a file stored on windows. It configures automagically most of the time. Also the last couple of releases haven't played nice on my laptop due to the splash screen getting stuck. Mandriva I've tried a few times, in fact one of my earliest experiences of linux was a mandrake install (god it sucked back then) but overall I still keep coming back to ubuntu.įedora. I prefer the tools in Ubuntu/Generic Gnome or text files in Arch personally. I'm not sure why, as before I tried Ubuntu it was Suse that I really wanted to try, it's just a bit clunky and I HATE yast. Tried Arch and it's a fun learning experience, but I had some trouble getting a workable system out of it as several fairly important components proved a right pain in the bum on my laptop. ![]() It's not the fastest or the prettiest but it's the one that lets me work and provides tools to make that easy. I need something that just works, and doesn't take ages to set up.
